Bruce "Shu Shu" Carrington faced his toughest challenge yet in the ring against the experienced Sulaiman Segawa. From the opening bell, Segawa set a fast pace, coming forward aggressively but with control. He stayed behind his jab and threw solid combinations, making it difficult for Carrington to find his rhythm. Early on, it was clear that Shu Shu was struggling to figure Segawa out, likely due to Segawa’s southpaw stance and physicality.
Segawa’s strength was also evident. In the close exchanges, he was able to push Carrington around, using his physical advantage to dictate the fight’s tempo. A big shot from Segawa early in the fight seemed to make Carrington more cautious, but after some adjustments, Shu Shu started to use feints and landed several clean right hands to the body. That gave him some momentum, and Segawa momentarily backed up, allowing Carrington to start coming forward.
Unfortunately, Shu Shu couldn’t fully capitalize on that momentum. He slowed down and allowed Segawa to continue applying pressure for most of the fight. However, Segawa’s output began to decrease in the later rounds, giving Carrington room to come forward again. Although his overall output wasn’t high, Carrington’s aggression in the final rounds might have given him the edge on the scorecards.
After watching this fight, it's fair to question if Carrington is ready for the top names at 126 pounds. The featherweight division is stacked with tough champions like Nick Ball, Brandon Figueroa, Rey Vargas, and Angelo Leo. Let’s not forget Stephen Fulton, who recently moved up as well. Given the depth of competition, Shu Shu might still need a few more fights to develop before becoming a legitimate contender for a world title.
That said, he showed resilience and a willingness to adjust during the fight. With more time in the gym and careful analysis of this bout, Carrington can work on the areas that were exposed against Segawa. He's young and talented, and there's no doubt he will continue to improve. Time will tell if he's ready to take on the top names in the division, but for now, there’s still some work to be done.
