Can Errol Spence Come Back The Same Fighter?

Errol Spence is set to make his return to the ring this October against the towering Sebastian Fundora. If this fight had been scheduled before Spence’s loss to Terence Crawford, I would’ve said it was a 60-40 fight in favor of Spence. But after witnessing the way Crawford dismantled him, I’d say the odds are now closer to 50-50.

We’ve never seen Spence take a beating like that before. Some say he was drained, struggling to make the 147-pound weight limit, but regardless of the reason, it was tough to watch. We’re so used to seeing Spence break his opponents’ wills, dominating them with relentless pressure. But now, he faces a younger, much taller opponent who thrives on fighting inside, just like him.

Spence’s journey back to the ring hasn’t been easy. He’s survived multiple car accidents and undergone several eye surgeries. The big question is: Will all of that take a toll on him in this fight?

I’m happy to see Spence back, but I can’t help but be curious about how he’ll perform. This fight will take place at 154 pounds, so hopefully, the higher weight class will alleviate some of the issues he faced at 147. It’s been a year since we last saw Spence in action, and while some fighters come back better after a long layoff, others show signs of rust.

One thing I have to give Spence credit for is his mindset. He’s a legend with one of the best résumés in boxing, and he’s always been adamant about not needing tune-up fights. He’s 100% right about that—he’s never taken the easy road.

Everyone is looking forward to seeing Spence back in the ring, hoping to witness him regain his form and greatness. But make no mistake, Fundora is a huge test, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how Spence handles it.
