It has been seven years since we last saw Andre Ward in action, but his name still carries immense respect in the boxing world. Meanwhile, Jake Paul has been actively building his boxing résumé—though his opponents have primarily been former MMA fighters or boxers who have long been removed from the sport. Given Ward’s age (40) and time away from the ring, he would be the perfect test for Paul, providing a legitimate challenge without the massive skill gap of an active elite boxer.

If Paul truly seeks the respect of boxing fans, a fight with Ward could be his golden opportunity. Even though Ward has been retired, he still trains and stays in shape. If Paul was willing to pursue a fight with Canelo—one of the best active fighters today—why not accept a challenge from a retired legend?

Ward himself acknowledged Paul’s rise, even mentioning his name after Paul’s bout with Mike Tyson. He challenged Paul to say his name, but Jake never responded. Was it fear of losing to a retired champion? A fight between Paul and Ward would undoubtedly sell. Every boxing fan would tune in to see if Ward could return and school Paul, or if Paul could prove he belongs at a higher level.

If Jake Paul truly wants credibility in the boxing world, he must take on a legitimate opponent who will test him. Andre Ward is that guy. Will Paul step up? Or will he continue to avoid real threats?
